Lace by Sheila A Mason BA FRSA

Central Nottingham in 1820 taken from Smith & Wild's map

This map shows the central area of Nottingham from which machine-made lace was marketed. The western area, centred around Park Street, Houndsgate and Castle Gate, was used mainly from the 1760s to 1830s, although some lace manufacturers and makers, especially those combining warp lace and hosiery, retained warehouses in this area into the twentieth century. The eastern area – the now famous “Lace Market” – on the hill around St. Mary’s church was used mainly from the 1840s through to the 1970s/80s. The modern Conservation area of “The Lace Market” is delineated.
