Bingham by Valerie Henstock

Archival/written

Extract from the accounts of Robert Hart, a cottager living on Fairfield Street (1860-61).

Estate records of the Earls of Chesterfield, lords of the manor from the 16th century to the 19th century, and of their successors the Earls of Carnarvon are at Highclere Castle, Berkshire. Access to these records is severely limited. The Bingham estates passed to the Crown in lieu of death duties in the 1920s.

Some stray estate papers, notably the 1586 survey (Nottinghamshire Archives DDTS 14/23), the 1776 survey and the 1841 tithe map and schedule are available at the Nottinghamshire Archives Office. Details are on the National Archives website.

Deposits at the University of Nottingham MSS. Department are listed at

Census returns from 1841-1901 are on microfiche at Nottingham Local Studies library and at Bingham library.
