'The Portland Collection encompasses all
four centuries of Cavendish and Bentinck
life at Welbeck. It is difficult to single out
highlights from such richness, but four themes
are prominent—the use of portraiture and
plate to reinforce a sense of dynastic continuity;
the important role of horses and
horsemanship; loyalty to the Crown; and,
perhaps most unexpectedly, the central role
played by women.'
