Reference is made to Almshouses as early as Whites 1853 directory. Kelly’s directories list many almshouses which have been demolished, e.g. Wartnaby’s, Pilcher Gate (pulled down by 1922), Nottingham and Willoughby’s, Fisher Gate (pulled down 1915) and Patten’s almshouses, Maiden lane, Barker Gate, Nottingham which consisted of two houses which were sold by later owners. The Directories hold a useful collection of information on the almshouses.
