Archival/written
There are very few local archival sources of relevance. The main issue with the lesser castles in Nottinghamshire is that they tend not to appear in the records. However, they do occasionally appear in:
- Records of Royal and Shrieval Expenditure: Pipe Rolls, Close Rolls, Liberate Rolls
- Royal Itineraries (chiefly the itinerary of King John, edited by T. Duffus-Hardy
- Inquisitions Post Mortem: records of surveys conducted
of estates upon the death of the lord, and
prior to the succession of the heir - Post-medieval estate archives and maps
The records seldom provide any detail about the castles themselves. Rather, it is often a mention of someone 'of' the castle, eg. John Smith of Greasley Castle. There is no description of buildings. Hence, we are reliant upon archaeology to understand the remains, and then try to match this up with information about the descent of the manor that might tell us who the lords are but says nothing about the castle.
